ic Kathe With an E: Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

Something you don't know, Mr. B was born and raised in  a small farming town in Saskatchewan.  His family immigrated to the United States and Colorado  when he was 17 years old.

Monday, October 10, is Thanksgiving Day in Canada.
I often get asked how Canadians celebrate the day.

The Canadian Thanksgiving occurs on the second Monday of October.  It coincides with the American holiday, Columbus Day.

Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the fact that Canada is further north.

The day is similar to the American holiday in that it is spent with family, watching  parades and football and eating turkey and pumpkin pie.

Even though Mr. B became a naturalized citizen several years ago I like to honor his heritage by celebrating  his traditional Thanksgiving Day. Plus, we get two Thanksgivings and one of Mr. B's favorite meals is the whole turkey dinner with all of the traditional fixin's!

The day is no different than any other holiday for me, I still like to set a festive table.

I started with a rust colored table cloth.  The wood chargers are actually wood platters from a restaurant supply store. The green dinner plates came from WalMart and the red salad plates are  part of a set from J C Penney.

I wanted everything in the center of the table to be easily removed at dinner time to make room for the real star of the day, the turkey.  The candlesticks are from the Dollar Tree and the beaded candle rings were a Hobby Lobby clearance find. I used a fall leaf platter and arranged floral berries, pumpkins and leaves on it.  You may remember the pheasant from an earlier post.  He looks so much better now doesn't he? You can read more about this poor, unfortunate bird here. I dry brushed him with brown craft paint followed by dry brushed gold metallic paint. Until the roasted turkey arrives, he is the well deserved center of attention.
I used goblets from the Dollar Tree for water and our everyday glasses for wine. I found a set of covered butter dishes from Ross.  I think they add a bit of class to the table. The pumpkin salt & pepper shakers also came from Ross. The napkin rings are from Goodwill and the napkins are  from WalMart.

The little pumpkins on each plate are from Pier 1.

Although we can't travel to Canada this year to visit with Mr. B's family and friends, we will gather around this table and be with them in spirit on this very special holiday.

We live in B.C. though will be traveling to Alberta to be with our daughter for this holiday weekend. Lovely tablescape and that pheasant has every right to be mad when you move him for the turkey - he makes a gorgeous centerpiece!

  17. I would LOVE to celebrate two Thanksgivings!!! I will have to adopt Canadian Thanksgiving. I need to take stock of my Canadian friends and get busy next year! Your table is set perfectly for the occasion, and I'm sure the pheasant doesn't mind taking a back seat to the turkey because he doesn't want to be the one getting eaten! :-) Have a happy weekend!

  18. Thanks for teaching us about the Canadian Thanksgiving! Your table is gorgeous. I love the ruffle-y effect of your dishes--it adds so much interest! I think your pheasant is enjoying his time in the spotlight instead of being on the menu! :)

  29. The pheasant turned out great. I had to smile...I'm always having to sand or touch up one of Sweet Mister's decoys with Magic Marker every time that he gets a new hunting dog. As puppies, they all seem to gravitate toward at least one of his wooden treasures. Your tablescape is lovely...I thought of the red maple leaf in Canada's flad. Thank you for sharing your charming design. Cherry Kay
