Summer Blooms In My Garden

It has been really hot and dry here in Colorado this year.  I'm talking humidity levels in the single digits and temperatures in the mid to high 90's. Luckily, I take our summer weather into consideration when I add new plants to my gardens and use drought tolerant plants as much as I can.

Penstemons are one of my favorites!
I love their small trumpet shaped flowers, as do the bees and butterflies.
They have really taken off for me this year, with dark to light purple blooms.
I like how my red knockout roses that I planted last year poke out among the purple flowers.
And check out the tall lilies!
They are doing really well this year!
I also have some orange lilies planted here and there. I have been dividing them each year and planting them willy nilly wherever I can find a spot.
The Jacob's Beard is also going gang busters!
I know that it tends to self seed like crazy but,
in my wild garden, that's okay :-)
Plus, the Pampas grass behind it keeps it in check for the most part.
The Coreopsis is also spreading well and the dainty yellow flowers help to break up the purple, reds and oranges.

We are to get cooler temperatures this week and, we will be heading into what is known as monsoon season where we get tropical moisture from the south, meaning rain!  I am hopeful that that combination really gets my garden going even better!
There are still some plants yet to bloom later in the season!

I hope to share some photos of the front garden and the cucumber garden soon. So, stay tuned!

  1. Will you come help me in my garden? Yours is so beautiful! I love all the colors of the flowers Right now one of mine is basically a weed garden, which is why I have a lot of the flowers in containers.

  2. Hi Kathe, your garden is looking lovely and neat with that white picket fence. White picket fences are so iconic, aren't they? I've pulled up an ugly photinia hedge in front of my Vancouver house and really feel like putting a white picket fence there now. :)

  42. Hello Colorado neighbor!! I LOVE your garden! I tried my first garden out this year, in a window box, and am failing miserably. First the heat was frying my plants, then I overwatered them in fear of the frying. Going on re-plant #3, maybe I can keep this last batch of carefully selected sun and heat loving plants alive! I'm such a rookie. Anyway, I was just impressed with how glorious your looks after all this heat! Stopping by from Create It Thursday :)
