Laundry Room Reveal

As you know, we had to replace our washer and dryer recently. I was able to get rid off our very old set on Craigslist. While waiting for the new set to be delivered, I figured this would be the perfect time to tackle one of my to-do's, paint and clean up the laundry room. It's not a big room, only 6'x6', and was looking tired and worn out. It was past time to treat this room like every other room in the house and shine it up!

That doesn't mean it can't be cute, right?? But, it had to be cheap too!
We had almost a full gallon of Lowes Olympic paint, color camel, so I used that to lighten up the room somewhat.
http:/
You can see here, in this very fuzzy photo, where I did a couple of test patches before committing to doing the whole room.
http:/
I had painted the cabinets and baseboards white several years ago so that saved me that task!
http:/
And this is the fugly brown door leading out to the garage.

Once the machines were in place, Mr. B and I had discussed taking out one of the cabinets and stacking the washer and dryer but after some thought, we decided not to.
We did know that we would not purchase the pedestals and thought about building our own but, because of the bulkhead, there wasn't much room to work with so, we decided to just have a countertop span them. After pricing out materials we were kind of stumped until Mr. B had the genius idea to use an Ikea tabletop as a countertop.
http:/
$24.99! The 59" length is just perfect! And I now have a space to fold clothes!
http:/
http:/
I bought 2.25 yards of springy floral material, on sale, at Hobby Lobby for $11.00 and made a curtain to hide the water hoses and electrical and to give the room a little bit of whimsy.
A $10.00 shower curtain rod from WalMart holds it in place.
http:/
Whenever we go to Ikea I always check out the As-Is section. This trip there was a stack of white cabinet doors, for get this, 99 cents each! Perfect for making signs! I just used some drywall spackle to plug up the hole for a knob. I then purchased some wooden letters from Hobby Lobby, painted them a color that coordinated with the fabric and hot glued them onto the door.
http:/
On the wall opposite the washer and dryer, I used another of the cabinet doors to hang our jackets on when we come home. The cute checkered knobs were a clearance find at Hobby Lobby for $1.02 each!  Perfect! Instead of wooden letters, I stenciled the letters on using a nice bright pink.
http:/
I used up some white trim paint we had on hand to paint the fugly brown door.  Sooo much brighter and cleaner looking, yes?
Using a picture frame I already had, I created a whiteboard to hang on the door. The dry erase ink wipes right off the glass.  I can now leave Mr. B little notes that he will see as he leaves in the morning. Or, reminders of things we might need to pick up, like dog food or light bulbs.
http:/
On the wall leading into the house I still have all of my cleaning tools. I need to figure out how to camouflage the recharging cord for my Swiffer vacuum.  Any ideas?
http:/
Max's dog food bin, a trash can and some dusters are nicely hidden away.
http:/
So, for around $50.00 (not including the new machines of course) I was able to create a fun little space. And, to be honest, as much as I really hated doing laundry, I am actually enjoying it a bit more now! That's worth more than $50.00 right there!

  5. Great job Kathe! It turned out beautifully. Love the curtain...and the white door...and the signs...and the counter. OK, I love it all! As for the Swiffer cord, can you hang it closer to the plug? Then it wouldn't show up as much. I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't point it out though :)

  8. Looks Great - we are in the midst of a laundry room redo as well...I purchased some cheery fabric too to do something similar in my laundry room in the clearance bin at Walmart...love the idea of the shower rod...I have a few of those hanging around here - going to steal your idea!

  10. I now know what I want on my next trip to Denver-a stop at IKEA for a table top to put over the top of my machines!! Thanks for sharing! And as a way to hide the cord-who cares. This is your work center, not a fancy display. It all looks great to me!♥♫

  11. I don't know what to compliment first...the table or the 'curtain'! Fantastic ideas!! I'd give anything if my daughter would let me tackle our laundry room. But, alas, no such luck. Yet!!! Thanks for sharing! Dona

  12. I love it! The curtain fabric is so cute and I love the basket on the tabletop. I can't wait until I can get a new front load washer and dryer! They look so nice and I love that you can have a table on top to fold! One day.....:) As for the cord....could you plug it into an extension cord and run it down along the floor and then up to the sweeper? It doesn't look bad though as is!

  13. This turned out great! Love the new color and the fabric really brightens it up, but those signs are my favorite! Love Them!!!! Great job. I might have to redo my laundry room 'one of these days'!

  14. The gathered curtain is a brilliant idea! Love the re-do. You could move the Swiffer vacumn closer to the cabinets and then the cord would not have to reach so far. Enjoy the end of January,

  24. Great job Kathe! I think my favorite part is the sweet floral curtain and the cabinet door coat hanger. Actually having a space to fold laundry may be the best part. My folding space is my kitchen island, which also serves as my crafting area! Thanks for sharing this wonderful transformation at A Humble Creation. You've given me some great ideas!

  61. So many great ideas! I didn't know that Ikea has an 'as is' section. I'll have to find that the next time I go. We used table tops to make two desks and they work great! We just put them on some organizer cube shelves we already had, so we were able to make 2 desks for $12.00! You gotta love Ikea!
