Thrifty Morning

I hadn't been out
hitting the thrift stores in a bit
and figured that stopping by a few
was in order.

As my luck would have it, Goodwill
accommodated my thrifty mood
by having another of their
50% off most items sales
on Saturday.

I only hit two Goodwills but was able to
score some thrifty deals.

The first item to make me stop in my tracks
were these lovely plate chargers
They are wood but look like embossed leather.
I was very pleased, when I turned one over, to see these tags
Yes, I paid $1.50 each for Pier 1 chargers!

I wandered a couple more aisles and then spied this box marked at $4.99, so on sale for $2.50
I am always on the lookout for storage items for all of my tablescaping "tools"
and was tickled pink to place this into my cart.
It's a silverware chest! The top lifts open and, added bonus,
it has another drawer for even more flatware storage!
This $2.50 beauty is going to free up some cupboard space
down in my storage area in the basement!

Now, if you are a regular thrifter you know, when looking at items,
you sometimes have to use your imagination.
As I have said before, it's not what it is but, what it can be!
That brings me to the next two finds
A large ribbed glass globe that could have been removed from someones hallway light.
And a candle stand that probably held a glass piece
for the candle to go in.
$1.00 each.
Apart, not much (unless you need a replacement globe for your hallway, which I don't)
But together,
I now have a sweet piece of art to be placed in my garden this spring!
I am not sure if I will leave the globe as is
swirl a couple of shades of nail polish in it for color.
What do you think I should do?

By this time my cart was pretty full
and it was getting crowded
(this is a very popular Goodwill on sale days)

So I decided to pay up and move on to another Goodwill closer to home.

The shelves were pretty bare at this
Of course, that doesn't mean I didn't find
I was able to find a couple of things to re-home!

Luckily, I had these in my hand when I did
as a gentleman came up to me
and said it was a good thing I grabbed them as he
was going to take them himself.
To take to scrap!!
Nuh uh!  Not on my watch buddy!
I held on to them even tighter!
Four tarnishy brass goblets at $1.00 each!
The tarnish didn't bother me.
I know the power of the internet
and found an easy, at home, remedy.
I made a paste of vinegar, salt and flour and covered one of the
goblets with it to test.
After sitting for 10 minutes I rinsed it and got this
Lesson learned!
Don't pass something up just because it isn't as pretty as it could be!
It's not always destined for scap!

I was also able to find some seasonal decor at this Goodwill.
This bunny couple just make me smile
Such sweet faces!
$1.50 each.

My last find will be put to use very soon!
A pair of cherub candle sticks for .49 each.
I hope to get my Valentine's Day decor
up this next week and these will
be used on a tablescape.

I had such a fun time shopping.
It was a nice day and people
were so friendly (even Scrap Man).
Sometimes I wonder, is it the thrill of the hunt I love
or, being out with others that
enjoy finding great deals like I do?

What about you?
What is it about thrifting
that draws you in?

  1. You found some amazing bargains! Love those goblets!

  2. I LOVE Pier 1! Now following you! Thanks for stopping by The Sunday Social at The Kurtz Corner! Hope to see you around the blog-o-sphere! :)

  3. Found you through the Sunday Social at The Kurtz Corner. Great deals! I never seem to find anything at my local Goodwill. Maybe I'll try again this week.

  4. great score on the goblets, hmmm, maybe I need to try your cleaning solution on a brass candlabra I found for 8 dollars.....

  5. Well, you definitely had a super day of thrifting. I love all of your finds. Great eye and definitely great buys. Hugs, marty

  9. Hi, Kathe! This is Serena. You critiqued my blog for me. Thanks!! Love your thrift store finds! Some people (my husband!!) can't understand my obsession with thrift stores. They are GREAT! :) I'll subscribe to your site if you subscribe to mine..... :) Always on the look-out for like-minded blog friends!!

  10. Those are great buys. I esp like the chargers. I'm still working on that eye you have - seeing the possibilities for things.

  11. You were certainly in the right place at the right time! Those chargers are great and the goblets are beautiful...good for you!

I am having a digital scrapbook software giveaway - if interested, stop by!

  12. Nice finds. I love going to Goodwill and finding a treasure (or 2!). Those goblets are really different and I look forward to seeing them in a tablescape soon!

  13. Good deals to be had! I seen that glass globe and was thinking the same thing...gazing ball! How cool that you even have a stand too! I was at the local K-Mart on the 23rd and just happen to be in the right place at the right time when they were marking down their Christmas stuff...90% OFF!!

  14. What a great thrifting adventure. I'm so glad you rescued those goblets from potential scrap. I'm picturing a lovely table with them.

I went thrifting yesterday, too, and as usual I came home DISGUSTED. Our Goodwill is ridiculous. I almost posted about it this morning, in fact. I took a few sneaky shots just to show what I mean.

  15. Fun stuff! I vote for nail polish in the globe :)

  16. I love thrifting. Great finds! I posted last Thursday about some of my purses I got from Goodwill! Love that place!!!

  17. You had a great thrifing day! Those bunnies are so cute! You will be needing them in a few short weeks! ;0)

  18. That's a great tarnish trick! I linked up on Coastal Charm with some great thrift/estate finds!

  19. And... I'm back! ;) I am in awe at your awesome finds! Love those plate chargers and really love those goblets! Nice work buffing those out and making them shine! Thanks for sharing... makes me want to hit goodwill now! :)

  20. I want to see what you do with the nail polish in the globe! I too love Goodwill!

  21. You did a great job thrifting. Come check out my blog, I have done a couple posts on my own thrifting.

  22. You found wonderful treasures, Kathe! I am always looking for silverware chests...what a great deal you got there. I can't tell you how many brass goblets I have passed up...I will be snatching up the next ones I see!
I am anxious to see how you use those gorgeous charger plates...

  23. The polish technique is wonderful. I like the thrill of the hunt and talking to people who are usually kindred spirits. People who swoop down on garage sales and never say hello just get on my last thrifting nerve.

  24. Great deals! We are getting a Goodwill about 20 miles from my home and I can't wait!

  25. You found some really great items.. but I have to admit... I do the happy dance right there in the aisles when I find a silverware box at a thrift store... yours is an exceptionally good find! love the drawer!

  26. Wish we had a Goodwill near us. What great deals!

  27. Great finds. I love your blog banner! I am your newest follower. Stop by for a visit sometime.

  28. Good job. I get into the mood to thrift shop every now and then and when I go it's always a fun time - even if I don't bring anything home. Thrifting stirs my imagination - sometimes I wonder how could someone part with 'this?' or Who on earth would have bought 'that' in the first place? Sometimes it sends me home to look at my own treasures and change them up a bit (or just dust!). The best part is bringing something home that you know you can use. I want to see what you do to the globe (iridescent nail polish?).

  29. Great finds!

  45. Wow you found some great things! Thanks for sharing at this week's BFF Open House!

  46. One day I was at a GW in Louisville and I saw them throwing metalish items into a pickup truck. Some of these items (bikes, pots, candle sticks, etc.) were perfectly good items and I shuddered to think what sort of vintage was in there! All were destined for the scrap heap!

  47. Every time you enter a thrift store - you just never know what you're going to find - you did very well - nice finds!!

  48. Great finds!! I love a good thrift store hunt. Thanks for sharing with us at Link It Up Thursday.
